Good Taste – The Sheffield Fair Trade Shop
We opened in March 2015, selling a wide range of Fairtrade food, greetings cards, jewellery, gifts, toys, and homeware. We are a not for profit business, assisted by volunteers and our mission is twofold.
Firstly, to provide a market for high-quality fair trade goods which demonstrate the talent and ingenuity of the producers, and enable them to earn a living and provide for their families. Secondly, our profits go to support ‘TASTE’, a charity working in Nigeria to provide clean drinking water and sanitation facilities to the local people.
Our profits go to support ‘TASTE’, a charity working in Nigeria to provide clean drinking water and sanitation facilities to the local people.
At the end of our first year, we donated all of our profits to TASTE Charity. An incredible total of £5000! This helped to repair two boreholes for a rural community in Nigeria. It also facilitated a ‘WASH’ workshop, which is an initiative to teach villagers how to maintain good basic hygiene practices.
After another successful year, we were delighted to announce the donation of all of our second year’s profit TASTE Charity. An incredible total of £5608. This donation has made a massive difference for those attending a school in Uganda. It has provided them with a new borehole, latrines and a ‘WASH’ workshop. This has transformed lives in the community! Freshwater can now be gathered safely.
After an amazing third year of trading, we were able to donate an incredible £7000 to TASTE Charity! This money helped fund a water project at Rurcon’s new headquarters site in Jos the State Capital of Plateau State.
Rurcon is a pan-African Christian NGO based in Jos. It helps Christian churches and development organisations promote good governance and sustainable development. It also assists churches and agencies to run training courses including training communities to evaluate the results of projects delivered by or aid agencies. Rurcon also helps communities to have increased access to safe water, health facilities, road networks and enhanced food security.
700 farmers were trained in Plateau State in 2016, more than half of whom were women.
Our donation helped to provide a solar powered borehole to ensure the availability of water all year round especially during the Dry Season for the irrigation of the extensive crop growing programme which is used for practical training of farmers from communities across Nigeria and neighbouring countries.
I’ve been lucky enough to visit producers in several different countries and have seen for myself the difference it makes to their lives.
I’ve been aware of fair-trade products for many years and have been really pleased to see how they have developed and improved. About 18 years ago I started selling fair-trade crafts from home and quickly became passionate about fair-trade as a way for people to earn their way out of poverty. I’ve been lucky enough to visit producers in several different countries and have seen for myself the difference it makes to their lives.
Meet the team behind the Sheffield Fair Trade shop. We are so grateful to all of our volunteers, who have helped us to support many artisans worldwide and support the work of TASTE in Nigeria.
